Whether you’ve just undergone your first laser hair removal treatment or you’re a seasoned pro, proper aftercare is crucial to maximize efficacy and minimize the risks associated with your session. In this blog, we’ll discuss the importance of post-laser hair removal skincare and provide you with valuable tips on maintaining a healthy and smooth skin barrier.

Before delving into post laser hair removal care, let’s review the different types of lasers used in permanent hair reduction and how they can affect your skin.

  1. Ruby Laser: The oldest type of laser that is sometimes still used for hair removal, this technology only works on those with light or fine hair and fair skin. It is more painful and time-consuming than newer laser technologies because it can only cover a small area of skin at a time.
  2. Alexandrite Laser: This laser has a shorter wavelength, meaning that those with light skin are the best candidates for treatment. Unfortunately, the laser can cause discoloration on darker skin tones. The Alexandrite Laser is most effective for larger treatment areas like the legs and back.
  3. Diode Laser: One of the newest and most popular laser technologies today, the Diode is the preferred device at NOVALUNE LASER because it is safe for all skin tones and skin types and can be used for treatment year-round. The Diode has a longer wavelength than the Ruby or Alexandrite, significantly reducing the risk of skin damage.
  4. Nd:YAG Laser: The preferred laser for dark hair on dark skin tones. This laser uses the longest wavelength out of all the lasers currently on the market, increasing its potential to destroy hair at the very bottom of the shaft.
  5. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light): While laser treatment uses a specific wavelength of light to solely target melanin, IPL uses a broadband of light with multiple wavelengths and endpoint targets. Due to the heat of the device, IPL is not ideal for darker skin tones and increases the chance of adverse side effects like scarring and blistering. Although treatments are often less expensive, more sessions are typically required.

Caring for Your Skin After a Laser Hair Removal Treatment

Many of our clients ask us about how to prevent negative side effects from laser hair removal treatments, and our answer is always the same – it’s what you do AFTER your appointment that makes all the difference in mitigating any negative outcomes.
Regardless of which laser you choose, proper aftercare is of the utmost importance to ensure optimal results and prevent any damage to your skin. So, what is the best aftercare for laser hair removal? Be sure to follow these tips and tricks to navigate the post-treatment phase with confidence, ensuring your skin remains radiant, healthy, and irritation-free.
  1. Avoid Sun Exposure: So, what’s the deal with laser hair removal and sun exposure? After your treatment, your skin is in a sensitive state and requires time to heal, so going that extra mile to protect your skin from the sun is crucial. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher (even on cloudy days!) and wear protective clothing wherever needed. If you received facial laser hair removal, be sure to keep your face shaded when you’re outdoors.
  2. Cooling and Hydrating: Immediately after your treatment, your skin may feel warm and slightly irritated. Applying a cold compress or aloe vera gel can help soothe the area. Keep your skin well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water and applying a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer.
  3. Avoid Hot Water: For the first 24-48 hours post-treatment, avoid hot showers, saunas, or any activities that could increase your skin’s temperature. Lukewarm water is preferable.
  4. Skip Exfoliation: Do not exfoliate the treated area for one week. Let your skin heal naturally without any abrasive scrubs or chemical exfoliants.
  5. Avoid Fragranced Products: Stick to fragrance-free skincare products to minimize the risk of irritation or allergic reactions.
  6. Loose Clothing: Wear loose-fitting clothing to prevent friction and irritation on the treated area.
  7. Patience is Key: Remember that it takes time to see the full results of your laser hair removal treatment. Hair may appear to grow back initially, but this is actually hair that was effectively targeted during your treatment and will gradually fall out over the next several weeks.
  8. Follow Up: Be sure to reach out to your dermatologist or laser technician if you have any questions or concerns.

Laser hair removal is an excellent way to be smooth in all the right places, but proper aftercare is imperative for optimal results. Always consult with a licensed professional to determine the best treatment plan for your unique skin type and needs. By taking the steps above, you’ll be on your way to hair-free bliss in no time.
